Inca Berries, also known as Golden Berries, Physalis & even Cape gooseberries, originate from the subtropical plateaus of South America. If you haven't tried these then you're missing out; they're possibly one of the most exciting superfoods around!
They enjoy a high antioxidant capacity, more than other known superfoods such as apples, goji berries & broccoli & contain the highest amount of fibre of all the common dried fruits, typically twice that of dates or prunes. Perhaps more importantly, they contain a high amount of soluble fibre too, to levels similar to prunes. This helps the body maintain a healthy balance with the soluble fibre helping to lower cholesterol.
Highly versatile, Inca Berries have a sweet taste to begin with, finishing with a delicate almost-sourness on account of the high vitamin C content. This makes them ideal for snacking, giving an energy boost in the afternoons or post-workout, as well as being great for adding to cereals, smoothies, shakes & even salads. They work especially well in 'Overnight Oats' as they have time to rehydrate & plump up to give a great boost.
Be careful though - some alternatives on the market are sweetened with sugar syrup - make sure you avoid those! Ours are 100% pure, dried whole fruits.
Try a few on a cheese board - they work well with goat's cheese & stilton, or drop into a tagine or stew to add incredible flavour to curries & Moroccan inspired dishes. They're even good chopped & added to stuffings instead of apricot.
So, if you're looking for something that's tasty, healthy & high in antioxidants, fibre, Vitamin C, A, Potassium & Phosphorous, try these little golden nuggets & change the way you snack!
For a great smoothie, add 1 tsp (8g) of Inca Berries to a blender with a banana & 200ml almond milk (or your favourite alternative) & blend well. If just used like this, the pot contains around 7 servings, so it's great value. We use them in our snack & trail mixes as well.
Volume: 56g resealable pot. Shelf life 18-24 months.
