Healthy Burger Hacks
Who doesn’t love a juicy burger when at a barbecue or eating out? They’re definitely one of our favourite summer treats, but they do pack a hefty calorie punch! If you’re beach-bound this summer and watching your weight, read on for some healthy burger hacks.
Skip the cheese
Who doesn’t love a cheeseburger, right?! But ditch the cheese in favour of salad, pickles or other fat-free treats. Ditto the bacon, fried onions and egg. We’re sorry to be killjoys, but…
Avoid mayonnaise
Swap mayonnaise and creamy sauces for salsa or relish to reduce the calorie count. If you’re going to a barbecue at someone else’s house, take an emergency jar just in case!
Bread-free burger
Consider going breadless and enjoy your burger without the bun. It might not be as easy to eat (!) but you’ll still enjoy the taste. If you can’t quite bring yourself to forgo the bread entirely, consider a healthier option like wholemeal pitta instead.
Healthy meats
Use good quality, lean meat for your burger, and you’ll be cutting back on fat. Lean beef is a good source of protein, as is chicken breast. Always choose additive-free, free range chicken for the best texture and taste.
Go veggie
Alternatively, ditch the meat altogether! Try making your own veggie burger with chickpeas, sweet potato and harissa for a tasty guilt-free treat.
