Everything You Need To Know About Magical Maca
Every day there seems to be a brand new 'IT' superfood on the block, that we all "need" to be squeezing into our diet in any which way possible. Maca is one superfood, however, that truly deserves a place in your morning smoothie, energy balls, raw chocolate, or healthy brownies. The malt-y, caramel-y Peruvian powder has multiple health benefits namely endurance, energy and hormone balance.
Unfortunately, due its rise in popularity amongst several healthy lifestyle bloggers and writers, the cost of Maca powder has gone through the roof. For a 500g pouch, it'll set you back at least £20 (I totally didn't weep when the maca used for the above image didn't all quite make it back into the pouch...honest!)
By incorporating just one tablespoon per day of magical Maca, you will be improving...
Stamina
For any fitness fanatic, whether you love hitting the weights at the gym or a sweaty session of hot yoga, adding some Maca to your diet could certainly help body go that extra mile.
Energy
Most of us are guilty of opting for a cheeky Almond Milk Cappuccino first thing in the morning, or a couple of rows of chocolate mid moning for a boost of energy. Caffeine is our best friend when we're sleep deprived after staying up all night watching old episodes of the The Crystal Maze (just me?). Unlike coffee and chocolate however, Maca is a natural source of energy and naturally caffeine free. Try a 'Maca Milkshake' first thing in the morning for an energy boost, or a Cacao & Maca energy ball when you're wishing the day away come 10.30am.
Hormones
My personal favourite benefit for Maca powder is its hormonal balancing effect. For anyone who suffers from horrible cystic acne on the chin (linked to hormones), or if you have Polycystic Ovary syndrome (PCOS), or even if it's coming up to that time of the month, Maca is fantastic. Maca contains nutrients which can calm hormones, and even reduces stress hormones. When you're feeling a little all over the place and can't quite put your finger on what's making you want to rip your arm off and throw it at someone, try and get some Maca in your life.
Uses
There are several ways you can use this magical, Malteser tasting powder. Popular uses include adding between 1tsp-1tbsp to your morning smoothie (tastes delicious when combined with raw cacao powder), swirling it into your porridge, and adding it to a raw energy ball recipe. I made Cacao & Maca Energy Balls on my blog and fellow Yumbles Community Champion Lucy made a version last week too.
