Crunchy Family Muesli Recipe

Setting yourself and your family up for the day with a hearty breakfast is always a good idea - especially as the cooler autumn months are only around the corner. Homemade, delicious muesli is the perfect energy-packed breakfast and is a much better choice than some of the 'sugar-laden' commercial varieties on offer at the supermarket. 

Muesli is traditionally based on rolled oats, wholegrains, fresh or dried fruits, seeds and grains and generally mixed with dairy or non-dairy milk alternatives, yoghurt or fruit juice. It is high in fibre and indeed the mighty oat contains beta-glucans - a type of soluble fibre, which helps to control blood sugar balance and keep you fuller for longer. It's also high in antioxidants, magnesium via the oats and the nuts provide a great source of protein.

The recipe below is simple to make and can be stored for 2 weeks in an air-tight container. By adding flaxseeds to the recipe, you have the added benefit of omega-3 fatty acids - a great aid to the body's immune system. Top with strawberries (make the most of the last of the seasonal summer fruits) and bananas for a little more sweetness for children and serve with your favourite milk.


  • 1/2 cup (30g/1oz linseeds (flaxseeds)
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup (60g/2oz) mixed nuts
  • 1/4 cup (30g/1oz) pumpkin seeds, chopped
  • 1 cup    (100g/1oz) rolled oats/gluten-free oats
  • 1/4 cup (30g/1oz) sunflower seeds, chopped
  • 2 tbsp walnut oil


Preheat the oven to 180c/350f/Gas Mark 4. Place all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and combine well. Turn out into a shallow baking tin and bake in the oven for about 20 minutes until golden brown and well toasted. You will need to stir the muesli once or twice during the cooking time.
