Almond butter is a great source of essential fats, proteins and minerals, many of which can be hard to come by if you don't eat animal products. It's a great source of slow-releasing energy too, making almond butter a great choice for breakfast. But why limit yourself to almond butter on toast?!

Here are 6 delicious ways to enjoy almond butter:

1. Smoothies

Adding a spoonful of almond butter to your smoothie is a great way to boost the protein content and squeeze in some healthy fats. My kids love a simple breakfast smoothie made with banana, oats, cows milk and almond butter. Almond butter, almond milk and a shot of espresso is my personal wake-up call of choice...

2. Quick and Easy Stir Fry Sauce

For a quick and easy midweek meal: stir-fry some vegetables then mix together a couple of spoonfuls of almond butter, soy sauce, raw honey, sesame oil and the juice of a lime. Pour over the vegetables and heat through for an instant stir-fry sauce. So much healthier (and tastier!) than anything you'll ever get from a packet. 

3. Cream Substitute 

Add almond butter to sauces and gravies for extra flavour and depth. I like adding it to dishes like mushroom stroganoff or vegetarian goulash instead of cream - healthy and delicious.

4. Tasty Baking

Have you tried baking with almond butter? Almond butter adds a gorgeous taste and texture to muffins, cookies and cakes...just try not to eat them all at once!

5. Energy Balls

Keep some of these in your fridge for those times when you need a mid-afternoon energy boost: mix oats, almond butter, soaked dates, cacao powder and a few drops of vanilla extract in your food processor. Shape into balls and leave in the fridge to cool. Feel free to experiment - add cacao nibs, crunchy almond butter instead of smooth, lemon zest, dessicated coconut...the options are endless! 

6. Best-Ever Sandwiches

Just like the peanut butter sandwiches you enjoyed as a kid, but without all that added sugar and salt! You can't beat almond butter and banana on wholemeal bread for a comforting teatime treat.
