Kick the Sugar: Homemade Iced Coffee

I’m sure you’re a major coffee addict who loves nothing more than a Frappuccino fix....otherwise you wouldn’t be interested in my homemade iced coffee recipe, right? We're having a bit of an Indian summer right now and I just can't resist getting my final few iced coffee fixes in before the cold weather sets in. But it won't come as any surprise that these sweet, creamy drinks take their toll on your health - as well as your pocket!

Your typical pre-mixed iced coffee bought at a chain coffee shop is packed with empty calories - sugar, whipped cream...plus other questionable ingredients like artificial flavourings. A large Frappuccino with whipped cream has well over 400 calories, most of which come from refined sugar. Not good! So why not ditch the sugar, the plastic, and create something equally delicious yourself?

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of brewed fresh coffee, left to cool
  • One cup of ice cubes
  • 3 pitted Medjool dates
  • ¾ cup of unsweetened Hazlenut milk (or Coconut Milk)

You can of course substitute any other milk of your choice (such as cow's milk or soy milk), but I think hazelnut milk and coconut milk both really complement coffee.

Method:

Pour all your ingredients into your blender (I love my Nutribullet for this), and blend until frothy. If you don't have a strong blender, you might want to use half a teaspoon of maple syrup instead of the dates, as you want a smooth texture without any bits. Pour into a tall glass or bottle if you're enjoying it on-the-go, and enjoy!

Variations:

Try experimenting with the following:

  • Add 1 tsp of raw cacao powder or carob for an Iced Mocha
  • Add a couple of Chai Spice Drops for a Chai Iced Coffee (absolutely love this one!)
  • Add a tsp of coconut oil for an extra silky texture and some helpful fatty acids
  • Whip-up the top of a tin of canned coconut milk (the solid part) to make dairy-free whipped cream

You can also use instant coffee if you're in a rush and haven't had time to brew your coffee and leave it to cool. Just use two teaspoons of instant coffee and dissolve in 50ml of hot water, before adding to the blender with the other ingredients.

Making your own iced coffee is a great way to cut down on refined sugar and save a few pennies too. Let me know if you decide to give it a go!
