Vanilla Chai Autumn Smoothie
As autumn slowly moves into winter, boosting our immunity and looking after ourselves is an important factor, as we head towards the colder months. This fragrant, exotic, spicy smoothie takes the best of the chai spices to create a creamy, indulgent breakfast or post-exercise rejuvenator. Add in a scoop of protein powder or 2 tablespoons of chia seeds for maximum benefit.
Chai spices provide many benefits: cardomom can help stimulate the mind and gives clarity, cinnamon is a 'winter hero' as it can be used to fight colds, flu and sore throats, cloves proove useful during the cold/flu season and vanilla aids digestion.
The simple chai is a delicious, warming drink in itself -perfect for this time of the year; just don't forget to add in the vanilla pod after you have extracted the seeds.
For the simple vanilla chai:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup/400ml water
- 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
- 4 cardamom pods
- 4 cloves
- Vanilla pod or essence (the seeds will be used in the smoothie)
Method:
Put the water in a pan. Add the ingredients and bring to the boil. Cover, turn heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the tea into a cup/jug.
For the smoothie:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of simple chai
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
- 1/2 cup brown rice milk
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 vanilla pod (seeds extracted, use the remaining pod in the chai)
- 1 tablespoon of almond butter (optional)
Method:
Brew the simple chai and chill in the fridge, then blend with the rest of the ingredients. Enjoy!
