Christmas Breakfast & Brunch Ideas

The dinner is usually sorted weeks in advance; we know who’s roasting the meat, who’s boiling the veg, and who’s making the cake. It’s all organised. But what about breakfast? Some may prefer to save their appetite – but a few of us still adhere to the “most important meal” ethos. It would be a shame to have a bland breakfast on such a special occasion – so here are a few suggestions to liven up your Christmas morning.

French Toast

Or eggy bread as most of us might refer to it! Whisk up 2 eggs, a splash of milk and season with salt and pepper then soak the bread in the mixture and fry in a hot pan. The best thing about it? You can have it with sweet fruit and honey, yoghurt or go all out and indulge in bacon, more eggs, beans - the works!

Eggs Benedict

There are plenty of variants of this dish – from adding smoked salmon (eggs royale), to substituting the bacon with spinach (eggs Florentine). However it is served, this classic American dish will bring something a little different to your Christmas - but don't forget the Prosecco!

Porridge

A steaming bowl of porridge is more than merely nutritious – it can be exciting, and especially comforting on a cold winter’s morning. You can add whatever you like; blueberries, strawberries – perhaps some cinnamon and citrus to fit the occasion. As a wholesome, hearty dish it's guaranteed to keep you going till your monsterous Christmas meal.

Cinnamon Toast

Another festive treat – instead of a bog-standard round of toast in the morning, why not try something different (not to mention easy)? All it takes is a mixture of cinnamon, sugar and butter – mixed to your taste. Spread it on a piece of toast, place it under the grill, and wait for it to melt into the bread.

Baked Eggs

An easy, yet completely satisfying brunch dish that can be adapted to suit a variety of tastes. From Mexican style eggs in a spicy tomato sauce with crispy potatoes to salmon and chives. All you need is sturdy skillet or ovenproof manikin, around 4 free-range eggs and a mixture of your choice, simply place in the dish and bake for about 10 minutes. My favourite is truffle oil, mushrooms and basil served with toasted tiger bread.

American style pancakes

This one really is a treat, and Christmas morning is by far the best time to indulge. All you need is flour, baking powder, caster sugar, milk and eggs to make thick, fluffly real American pancakes! It may sound strange if you've never tried it before but believe me, bacon and maple syrup is the ultimate topping.

Mocha Au Lait

Perhaps you’ll already be missing that morning-chocolate, what with the advent calendar coming to an end the day before. Or maybe you just fancy something other than a bog-standard tea or coffee. Either way, adding chocolate chips and marshmallow to a milky mocha is fool-proof way to begin the busy festivities.
