Aphrodisiac Foods – Fact or Fiction?

February the 14th is approaching, which means, once again, wracking your brains for gift ideas. But Valentine’s Day is about more than just gift-giving – it’s a celebration of your love for that special person in your life. Perhaps you have the evening planned already – maybe you’ll be cooking the same meal you had on your first date? Or maybe you'll be wondering about the seductive powers of aphrodisiac foods! Are there such meals that can...well, get you both in the mood?

The following are a few ideas for you to try out:

Oysters

Many believe it’s just the look of these shellfish that has spawned the aphrodisiac myth (not to get too suggestive). But they do actually contain zinc, which helps regulate sexual hormones – so there’s a bit of truth in there after all.

Spicy Food

Another one you’ve no doubt read about in the gossip magazines. The only science here, really, is what spice can do: get the heart pumping, stimulate endorphins and nerve endings, make you sweat… need we say any more?

Chocolate

Obviously too much milk chocolate will be a bit bloating, thus a bit of a mood killer. Yet chocolate contains the chemicals anandamide and phenylethylamine, which are serotonin boosters. And let’s not forget the endless uses of melted chocolate.

Fruits

A light desert might be a good idea, for obvious reasons, and your best bet would be a fruit salad. Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants which improve blood flow, as does the vitamin C in citrus fruits and strawberries. And let’s not forget watermelon. It contains citrulline; an organic compound that relaxes the blood vessels in a similar fashion to Viagra.

Yes, but will these ideas actually do anything, you ask? There’s only one way to find out...!
