How to Say Thank You
One of the most important things that we can do to build our relationships with others is to express gratitude. This can be done so simply but I though I'd include some more creative ideas of what we can do to just say 'thank you.'
- Send a handwritten note.
I remember doing this a lot as a child after Christmas and my birthday and I still get some very cute thank you notes now from little cousins and family friends. However, why do we stop doing this after we grow up? A small handwritten note, sent through the post or just left where the recipent can see it, it such a great way to say thank you. Permanent, a keepsake and means more than a hasty e-mail or text.
- Keep any thank you's simple.
There is nothing worse than a thank you which goes on and on and on until you are both uncomfortable. Simply say thank you and say why you are grateful. If you are writing a note, end with a 'see you later' or 'love' and if doing it face-to-face. Simply shake their hand or hug them and walk away - don't linger and make the situation awkward (or make them feel that they have to say thank you back).
- Practice.
This is bound to feel awkward at first, but with practice this can become a habit. Start small, maybe with a parent or your partner (maybe not the colleague at work who you barely see). Build up your practicing and then build up your confidence.
