How to enjoy Fruit Cake this Father’s Day the Yorkshire way!
For all of you who have Dad’s out there who love a fruit cake, we thought we should share with you - in time for Father’s Day – a few of our recommended cheeses to enjoy with it!
Eating fruit cake with cheese is commonplace in Yorkshire and is becoming more and more popular all over the UK. In fact Fruit Cake & Cheese was traditionally a miner's packed lunch, as the cake and the cheese kept each other fresh.
To help you make the most of this delicious combination we have paired all our fruit cakes with some wonderful cheeses – some pairings more unexpected than others!
Cherry Orchard & Stichelton
Made on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire to a traditional Stilton recipe but with unpasteurised milk, Stichelton is hand-ladled to produce a creamy, nutty cheese with a rich yet gentle blue note and is delicious with the sweet, almondy notes of the Cherry Orchard fruit cake, bursting with Cherries & Almonds & plump, juicy vine fruits, and steeped in fragrant Cherry & Almond liqueur.
Ginger Tingle & Kirkham's Lancashire Cheese
Traditionally served with Eccles Cakes in Lancashire, Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese is the last and only farmhouse Lancashire cheese made from unpasteurised milk. Made by the Kirkham family in the village of Goosnargh near Longridge, Graham learnt to make Lancashire cheese from his mother (the famous Mrs Kirkham) who learnt from her mother...
The Kirkham’s make both creamy (aged up to 12 weeks) & tasty (aged over 12 weeks) Lancashire. Theirs is a more traditional version of Lancashire than the crumbly Lancashire now made by many modern dairies, giving a buttery, yoghurty flavour with a fluffy, light texture that melts in the mouth, and an excellent foil for the mouth warming effect of the Ginger Tingle fruit cake, packed with Stem Ginger, Walnuts & plump juicy vine fruit & steeped in mouth tingling Ginger liqueur.
Cinnamon Pippin & Richard III Wensleydale Cheese
Now made by Andy Ridley in Richmond, Yorkshire, Richard III Wensleydale Cheese is one of the only artisan-produced Wensleydale cheeses available. Originally made to a traditional pre-war recipe by Suzanne Stirke who discovered her grandmother’s cheese-making notes for Wensleydale in the attic, and decided to recreate Wensleydale cheese as it would have once been. It was named after Suzanne’s dairy – Fortmayne Dairy – based near Middleham, which was the childhood home of the future Richard III.
This lovely, light cheese is moist and creamy in texture, with a fresh, milky tang. The sweetness of the Cinnamon Pippin fruit cake, full of plump, juicy sultanas & hazelnuts; spiced with Cinnamon and steeped in tummy warming Cinnamon Apple Crumble liqueur, and the freshness of the cheese complement each other perfectly.
Coco Bazaar & Waterloo
Coco Bazaar is an exotic and luxurious Chocolate Fruit Cake, with Pistachios, Honey, Cardamom, plump juicy vine fruits and laced with heady Rose Geranium and Turkish Delight liqueur.
Waterloo is a mild, semi-soft Guernsey milk cheese with a buttery flavour, made by Anne and Andy Wigmore near Riseley in Berkshire. Complementing the rich, perfumed & complex flavours in the Chocolate fruit cake, it is made using a wash curd method which dilutes the acidity to achieve a soft, gentle flavour. Its distinctive yellow colour is due to the natural carotene in the unpasteurised Guernsey milk which comes from a single herd of pedigree Guernsey cows near Henley.
And just look at what one customer told us about her Father's Day purchase last year!:
"Yesterday we ordered a Cherry Orchard fruit cake as a Father's Day gift for a dedicated cherry lover … and a day later it’s arrived! Fabulous delivery service. We look forward to the cherry lover’s reaction on Sunday – and will let you know! Thank you for being so speedy whizz!!! V best to you...
... Cherry-lover LOVED your Cherry Orchard fruit cake … he’s still loving it as it is packed with fruit and flavour, and he’ll hopefully have a few more days of joy … if he paces himself! The whole cherries are acely flavoursome, but the bonus were the fab whole almonds … super and stand-out compared to other fruit cakes.
We tried your cake with a strong cheddar, V yummy combo – also with a strong Italian coffee; lovely! We have no hesitation in recommending this super cake, and the delightful tin keeps that flavour in the cake so well. Plus the gift card that you added was a lovely design. All round SOOPER DOOPS!!! Thank you!"
As the saying goes - 'a piece of fruit cake without cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze!'
Enjoy!
