How to choose the perfect beer this Father's Day

My Dad, like a lot of Dads, is a bit of a beer fan. I, a complete novice in the world of beer, struggle to know what to buy. As such, I thought I'd put together a little guide for those, like me, who would just like to know the basics and to pick a decent beer for father's day (along with some suggestions for food gifts they could go along with).
- Ales: full bodied beers with a fruity or nutty finish with many varities available. Definitely best to buy a couple of inidividual types rather than a six pack as tastes between ales can be very different. Goes well with a variety of food - but check the label, as different ales compliment different foods.
- Lagers: the traditional beer (picture a beer, and you are probably imaging a lager). Normally served cold, and designed to be crisp and refreshing. Perfect to drink outside on a hot day with a BBQ or as an accompaniment to spicier foods.
- Stouts: normally darker and with a barley flavour. Quite dark and quite bitter. Perfect to go with something sweet, such as a pudding or sweeter foods.
- Malts: dark and sweet beers and can be flavoured with caramel. toffee or nuts. Perfect for if your Dad has a bit of a sweet tooth!
