Five Spices to Boost Your Health and the Taste of Your Food

Spices have been used in cooking for hundreds of years for their delicious flavours and various health benefits. Many spices are said to treat illnesses, inflammation, pains and aches, but not all of us here in the UK make use of them on a regular basis. Adding a few spices into your everyday cooking is a great way to inject some exciting flavour, as well as improve your health.

Here are five spices to boost the health and taste of your food:

Turmeric

This Indian spice is the reason most curries have a strong yellow colour. Turmeric has strong antioxidant properties which derive from the Curcumin within it. It's also a natural anti-inflammatory, can fight off bad bacteria, and is believed to be the main reason for India’s low rates of bowel cancer.

Cinnamon

A warming spice we all seem to love at winter time. Cinnamon has been used for years for medicinal reasons, but one of its main benefit is it's ability to lower blood sugar levels, which is an anti-diabetic effect.

Ginger

This strong spice may be the best for treating nausea and an unsettled stomach. It’s great for digestion and the common cold too - really useful if you’re pregnant!

Cumin

Similar to Ginger, this spice is also great for your digestive system and is known to help heal a cold. It is also high in Iron, which we need to keep our energy levels high and boost our immune systems. It has a rich flavour that is widely used as a base for many Indian curries.

Cayenne Pepper

OK, we admit it: this isn’t a spice, it’s a herb. However, it is damn spicy! This chilli pepper is known as a ‘miracle herb’ and would give any dish a spicy kick. It cranks up the heat in your body and in turn stimulates circulation, digestion and cleanses the body. Drinking warm water with lemon and a teaspoon of cayenne pepper before breakfast is reputed to be one of the very best ways to kick-start your digestion and boost metablisim. If you try it, let us know!
