How To Make Your Own Gin

Are you a fan of G&T? Perhaps lately that’s all you find yourself drinking on your nights out. (... Or in.) If you want to experiment with making your own gin at home, we can help get you started.

How to make gin

Ingredients

750ml vodka

2 tbsp juniper berries

2 cardamom pods

2 peppercorns

1 tsp coriander seeds

Half a cinnamon stick

A piece of orange peel (no white pith)

A piece of lemon peel (no white pith)

Directions

Use boiling water to sterilise a glass bottle or mason jar.

Add your vodka and botanicals to the jar, leave to infuse for 24 hours in a cool, dark spot.

Add peel and leave for up to another 24 hours, giving the jar a gentle shake a couple of times.

Taste your infusion. Don’t leave it to over-infuse.

When you’re happy with the taste, use a sieve or muslin to remove the botanicals and any sediment.

Leave your gin to sit for at least two days, then strain it again to remove any remaining sediment.

Bottle your gin, grab some friends and enjoy making your own cocktails.

Optional: You can pass your gin through a water filter jug a few times in order to achieve a clearer result. Homemade gin can have a yellow or orange tint to it, depending on the botanicals used; this however does not affect the taste.

Wondering how to make flavoured gin? Don’t be afraid to experiment with infusing more herbs or spices, or even liquorice powder, lavender, and anything else you might fancy. Or, if you’re looking to simplify, you can follow step by step instructions and use pre measured ingredients with a gin making kit, such as this Introductory Gin Kit by Kitchen Provisions. Make sure to show off to your friends once you get the hang of it, too.
