80Noir Ultra was born because the founder Carole Armitage has spent over 35 years researching and developing the best chocolate, the cultural meanings and how to apply it to our mental and physical wellbeing. As a child she was in hospital a lot and discovered she had low blood sugar which when stressed would culminate in fainting episodes and illness. Hot chocolate was her go to medicine… Since then it has been a love affair to last all centuries and grown into the beautiful 80Noir Ultra that it is today. Sourcing the best beans from around the world to create a depth of flavour that is creamy, rich, smooth and without the bitterness, so that you can enjoy all the benefits of cacao without sacrificing on flavour.

  • Tell us a few words about the launching of your business

Launching 80Noir Ultra was one of the best decisions of my life, I did it because I want to show the world that premium dark chocolate can change our wellbeing and mental health for the better and a daily dose of our chocolate will do just that. As it has mine. We are here to change minds, be a disrupter to the tea and coffee industries and prove that dark hot chocolate has a place in the world to balance our wellbeing and improve our mental health. Created at a time when the world around us was losing control, we are the phoenix rising from the ashes to share with you an alternate way to be happier, calmer in today’s society.

  • Tell us a bit about your ingredients and how you source them

Our chocolate is from Tanzanie, Saint Domingue and Equateur which is collated at the factory on the outskirts of Paris, where it is mixed with sugar and natural vanilla flavouring and made into our beads and mini bars, from there it is transferred to Belgium for certification and shipped over to the UK. Once it is deposited in my warehouse, we then make the training bars by hand and package the 100g and 300g bags.

  • Do you still consume your own products?

I practice what I preach. I have it every single day because I truly believe that a daily dose of chocolate is the key to soothing your mind, body and soul. 

  • What is your favourite product from your range and why? 

I love the beads, the simplicity and smoothness of them is distinctly pleasing. I love opening a fresh bag and smelling the aroma, it instantly makes me feel calmer and happier.

  • Describe a typical day

I wake up, I make a shot of 80Noir Ultra with Aztec spice whisked with hot water, and spend 5 minutes just mindfully drinking my drink whilst focusing on the tasks of the day. I will then either go for a walk, run or meditate, come back have a shower and breakfast before I start my day. Which is varied. I like to set 3 tasks and focus on accomplishing those. I do try to step out for some fresh air at lunch time or go for a walk later in the day to clear my head, I may make a protein hot chocolate in the afternoon as well, where I use my  beads with my favourite protein powder to give me an extra boost if I feel drained. If its been a day by the computer and then in the evening, I make a wholesome dinner and set aside tasks for tomorrow and enjoy my evening. It does vary from day to day but I always start my day with an 80Noir Ultra shot.

  • What part of your job do you enjoy the most and why?

First thing in the morning, as its quiet and I can spend the time I need to tap into what I want to achieve today and get my head in the right mindset. I always look forward to my hot chocolate shot, its how I wake up and helps me focus and bring clarity to mind.

  • What have been some memorable business challenges along the way? 

The most memorable was not having the stock in place at our most peak season and having to think outside the box for how to overcome the challenge. We do what we always do, re-group, think it through, devise a plan and work the solution till it presents itself. It might not be what we originally anticipated but we focus on finding a solution instead of the problem.

  • Have you got anything exciting coming up? 

We will be launching a new range of chocolate infused granolas, porridges and mueslis April/May, our chocolate is a popular accessory to adding on top of porridge so we thought we would create a range that does it for you so you can start the day on the best footing, since breakfast is considered the best meal of the day, we want everyone to have the chance to start their day right.

  • Who are some other producers that you admire and why? 

I love the likes of Pretty Athletic, Vivendi Apparel, That Protein, Oatavenue – they are born from passion to serve the public, to make a difference to everyones lives in a very positive way, which is what 80Noir Ultra is all about.

  • Lastly, why should people try your product? 

Because in this busy day and age, we all need to find or carve out time for ourselves in order to balance our wellbeing and mental health, and 80Noir Ultra delivers a dose of positivity in the form of premium quality chocolate that helps re-set your mind and soothe your soul.
