What is Mindful Eating? And Why is it Important?

Mindful eating is a hot topic in the health and wellness world right now.

But what is it, exactly? Mindful eating is the practice of paying attention to your food and eating habits to create a more positive relationship with food. The reason why people are turning to mindful eating is that it can help you become more aware of your eating habits and make better choices when it comes to food, not only in terms of the ingredients but also in terms of how it was sourced or produced.

The rise of mindful eating post-pandemic is likely because so many of us have been more aware of the quality of our food and where it comes from! With more time spent at home, we’ve had to cook more meals from scratch and become more mindful of the ingredients we’re using. We want to make sure that the ingredients we use are fresh and nutritious, and that we’re not eating processed foods full of preservatives. Another thing also, we want to make sure that it is environmentally friendly and that the animals were treated well in the process... This made us want to just consume quality food, putting quality over quantity.

There are a lot of benefits to mindful eating, such as weight loss, improved digestion, and reduced stress levels. When you’re more mindful of your eating habits, you’re less likely to make impulsive or emotional decisions about food. You’re also more likely to appreciate your food more and savour the flavours, which can lead to a reduction in overeating.

According to studies on psychology, mindful eating helps us learn to hear what our body is telling us about hunger and satisfaction. It helps us become aware of who in the body/heart/mind complex is hungry, and how and what is best to nourish it. Dr Jon Kabat-Zin, creator and medical researcher, says that mindful eating:

"helps to focus on the present momenthelps to focus on the sensory pleasures of eating through practices of eating slowly, chewing food thoroughly and stopping between bites."

With all of these benefits, it’s no wonder that mindful eating is becoming more popular. In the UK itself, more consumers are interested in plant-based diets, and this is likely because of the health and environmental benefits. Luckily, nowadays many small-batch producers are using quality ingredients and sustainable practices, so it’s easier than ever to find good quality food. These artisanal producers are mostly local, so you’re supporting your local economy as well.

So if you’re looking to improve your relationship with food, why not give mindful eating a try? It’s a simple practice that can have a big impact on your health and well-being. You can start by checking out out some vegan cheese to see what plant based alternatives you can add to your diet!
