We Love Anchovies: Here's Why

We Love Anchovies: Here's Why

This powerful little fish is one we can’t get enough of. Anchovies taste great, plus they’re extremely good for us. They have a strong flavour for such a small fish, and a little definitely goes a long way. Most of us associate them with pizzas and maybe even with antipasti, but they can also act as a brilliant (natural) flavour enhancer in lots of other dishes too.

We love anchovies: here’s why...

  • They're great for sauces, dips and dressings: Most people don’t realise but they are often found in many Ceasar salad dressings and Worcestershire sauce. Try whizzing up anchovies, olive oil, garlic and lemon juice for a super quick salad dressing
  • Healthy fats: Anchovies pack a real punch for such a small fish! They’re high in Omega-3 and other healthy fats
  • Calcium kick: Dairy products aren’t the only source of calcium! Anchovies and oily fish are a great source of calcium too, making them great for anyone with an allergy to dairy products
  • Iron and Magnesium: Anchovies are a good source of iron and magnesium - both essential for the healthy functioning of the body.

One word of warning before you start tucking in. Anchovies are high in salt, because of the way they are packed and stored. If you do find the taste too salty, you could try soaking them in cold water for a couple of hours, then draining before using them. As with all good things - enjoy in moderation, and you should be fine!
