Travel Sick? Read This

Some of us are unlucky travellers. We dread long car journeys, consider sick bags essential carry-on luggage… and don’t even get me started on boats. If like me, you’ve tried everything from sickness tablets to keeping your eyes closed for entire journeys (never works) - you might want to give ginger a try.

Ginger has been used as a treatment for nausea and sickness for centuries, especially in Chinese medicine. It’s thought to be a natural antiemetic - a substance that prevents nausea.

Beat travel sickness with ginger: here's how

  • If you know you’re going to be going on a long journey, try to eat (or drink) something containing ginger a couple of hours before you leave. The most effective way I’ve found to combat travel sickness is by peeling a piece of raw ginger (using the back of a teaspoon), then chewing it. It’s pretty fiery, so not for the faint-hearted!
  • If you can’t quite stomach eating raw ginger, you could try making ginger tea. Peel then grate a piece of raw ginger, cover with hot (not boiling water) in a teapot, then leave to infuse for at least ten minutes. When it’s cooled down a little, add some lemon juice and honey. I like to take some with me on the journey too, either cooled or in a flask.
  • Another easy way to eat ginger is by enjoying some ginger biscuits. Not posh biscuits, just run-of-the-mill, shop bought ginger biscuits. My pregnant friends have sworn by them for beating morning sickness too, so it’s definitely worth having an emergency packet on hand.

There’s no concrete scientific proof that ginger can beat travel sickness, and it may not work for everyone. But if you’re sick of nausea ruining your summer travel plans, maybe you should give it a try. It’s certainly worked for me!
