Buy or DIY? Ketchup

The simplest things to make are often the things we rely on supermarkets for. Take Heinz Tomato Ketchup for example - lots of people won’t even consider buying from any other brand! But although big brand sauces are convenient (and popular) mass-produced sauces are packed with sugar, colourings and potentially harmful additives. So when it comes to ketchup, should you buy or DIY?

Buy:

Shop-bought ketchup typically has a very high sugar content (around 25g of sugar per 100g). Consuming too much sugar can lead to serious health problems such as obesity, diabetes and teeth problems. Many ketchup brands contain high fructose corn syrup, a non-natural, processed sweetener found in lots of foods, which has been linked with many health problems.

Most ketchups are also high in salt. Most (if not all) shop-bought ketchups will have a few grams of salt added to each bottle. Eating too much salt has been associated with heart attacks, stroke, high blood pressure and diseases such as dementia.

DIY:

The joy of making your own ketchup is that you know exactly what is going into it. You can use fresh, natural ingredients. Plus, it’s easy, costs next to nothing to make, and will taste great!

All you need is some tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, an onion, garlic, basil, red wine vinegar and some brown sugar. Fry the onions and garlic whilst adding the puree, then boil the rest of the ingredients until the sauce has thickened. Once all is cooked, whizz in a blender and your tasty ketchup will be ready! Better still, it should keep for up to 3 months in the fridge.

The Winner:

Homemade ketchup is definitely the winner when compared to cheap and nasty supermarket ketchup. Sure, it takes more effort, and it won't taste the same. That's because it's not over-loaded with sugar and salt!  If you are planning to buy, then be sure to look for ketchups that have no artificial flavours or preservatives, and which keep sugar and salt to a minimum.
