Buy or DIY? Teriyaki Sauce

Buy or DIY? Teriyaki Sauce

The great thing about this Japanese-inspired sauce is that it has virtually no fat (depending where you buy it from, of course!). It’s bursting with flavour and is widely used as a marinade for meat - perfect for adding an oriental touch to your barbecue.

Most teriyaki sauces are a blend of soy sauce, honey or mirin, ginger and a range of other spices. But although we may think this is a guilt-free sauce, this is rarely the case when buying Teriyaki sauce from the supermarket. Bottled sauces are often packed with salt, artificial preservatives and emulsifiers which can catch us out.

Store-Bought

The spices used in teriyaki sauce are great for our bodies and individually they have many health benefits. However, the preservatives and other artificial ingredients often found in shop-bought sauces are another matter entirely.

Another reason to be wary of shop-bought Teriyaki Sauce is the high level of sodium. Eating too much sodium can cause heart disease, increased blood pressure and kidney problems.

High sugar content is another problem. In a 100ml bottle of Teriyaki Sauce, you can expect to find around 50 grams of sugar, which is the recommended daily amount (RDA) of sugar for women.

Homemade

Making Teriyaki Sauce at home couldn’t be easier: you won’t need many ingredients, and you can limit the amount of unhealthy ingredients (like sugar) that go into it.

All you need is a cup of cold water, a few tablespoons of brown sugar, a small amount of soy sauce, honey, crushed garlic, grated ginger. Add the ingredients to a saucepan on a medium heat, then stir in some corn flour mixed with water to thicken.

Why not give it a go, and try making your own Teriyaki Sauce? Let us know how you get on!
