Kiwi: 5 Reasons to Love This Furry Fruit

The kiwi fruit is interesting to us all. Its furry outside looks unappealing and inedible, but when cut open the exotic colours and tastes are revealed that suddenly make us want to grab a spoon and tuck in. They may be small, but like oranges they pack in a lot of vitamins and minerals, and can brighten up any salad or breakfast bowl.

Don’t be afraid to eat the skin! It may have a hairy texture but with a quick wash the skin will give you even more fibre than the green flesh inside. Kiwis are a great fruit to include as one of your 5 a day, and here’s why!

High in Vitamins

There’s a vast array of vitamins and minerals in kiwis, but the ones we’re most grateful for are vitamins C and E. Kiwis have nearly twice the amount of vitamin C than oranges, and they’re much smaller! Vitamin C can boost our immune system to give us healthy bones through better iron absorption. Vitamin E on the other hand is great for younger-looking skin, protection from cell-damage and reducing cholesterol.

High in Serotonin

You may not have heard of this brain-boosting chemical, but its natural health benefits prevent memory loss and transmit messages to our brain to make us feel happier. It is known that those with a serotonin imbalance are more prone to depression and other psychological problems.

Good for Our Eyes

Lutein is a carotenoid vitamin that is known to help the central vision of the eyes and prevent us from getting age-related sight loss. Carotenoid is also found in carrots (hence the name), and is why they are known to help us see in the dark. While they don’t make us have night vision, carrots and kiwi both share eye healing properties.

Good for Digestion

Kiwis are a great source of natural fibre and can aid the movement of our digestive system whilst cleansing it.

High in Magnesium

A kiwifruit a day can deliver nearly 17 mg of magnesium - 3 times that of an apple! Magnesium is a mineral that our bodies cannot create on its own, and most of us don’t get enough of it. We need to make sure we eat enough magnesium-rich foods for proper nerve and muscle function.

If you love kiwi fruit, what's your favourite way to eat it?
