Mrs Mahal's Garam Masala
We are really pleased to announce that we are selling Mrs Mahal's Masala on behalf of Ballot Street Spice, a social enterprise based at the Victoria Park Academy primary school in Smethwick, Birmingham.
Their dry masala blend is great all-rounder for meat, fish and vegetables. Use in curries, soups, stews, or use to flavour dahl or simply sprinkle over your favourite dish as a seasoning. Made from a blend of cumin, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, cloves, mace, coriander and black pepper, Mrs Mahal’s Masala is sure to be a cupboard staple.
The story behind the Masala: "One day my mum asked me “where will you get your Masala from when I’m not here anymore?” Her question really got me thinking! I used her Masala in lots of my dishes and I couldn’t imagine cooking without it. I realised that Mum had a wonderful gift to pass on, which had been in our family for generations. If I didn’t learn to make her Masala something special would be lost and my cooking would never be the same again! Mum learnt to make Masala form her Aunty in India, now she has passed it on to me and in the future my daughters will learn the recipe too. It’s our family’s legacy and we hope you enjoy using Mrs Mahal’s Masala just as much as we do!" Shindy Mahal – Ballot Street Spice

Ballot Street Spice - their story:
Our story is simple: we want to bring our community together and celebrate the diversity that exists in Smethwick, whilst creating opportunities for the local community.
Ballot Street Spice is a social enterprise, grown from Victoria Park Primary Academy’s, Spice Academy. A weekly after school spice club, where pupils and families from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, cook and share spice blend recipes.
Spice has a long standing social history; it’s wonderfully symbolic of traditions, tastes and different cultures. Since the 1950’s people have been arriving in Smethwick from around the world, creating a diverse tapestry of many languages, religions and cultures.
By celebrating diversity & cherishing old traditions, we want to bring people together through spice and share their spice stories before they are lost.
We are hot on the spice trail and on an adventure to unearth the traditional use of spices across the different cultures in Smethwick and we want to share these recipes with you.
Together we roast, grind and blend spices by hand to make original spice products. By buying our products you are helping us create employment for the local community and real learning for young people.
