10 Foods That Will Energise Your Kids Before School

It is a known fact for thousands of years that a well-balanced and nutritious diet isn’t only the key to a healthy body but also to a healthy mind. Feeding your kids the right foods will help them be more active, enhance their memory and allow them to perform better in their everyday activities.

On top of these benefits, you are also helping them create healthy habits which will accompany them for the rest of their lives. If you wish to know a few simple yet very nutritious foods which will help energise your little ones before school, simply keep on reading.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is a great choice to start the day with for both kids and their parents alike. Being high in calcium which promotes bone health, it will supply your kids with healthy fats and a good source of animal protein which will help them have the energy for all of their activities.

Honey

Honey is definitely considered a superfood and has a lot of things to offer to those that consume it. Being rich in antioxidants it boosts the immune system and will help your child feel more energised and ready to take on the day.

You can even use honey during the colder months in order to help them deal with common coughs and colds. It is a good idea though to use it in moderation as it is still high in calories, despite being so much more nutritious than any other type of sugar.

Nuts and a nut butter

Various nuts such as almonds, cashews, and hazelnuts as well as their butter can be a great source of fiber, healthy omega-3 fats and a variety of vitamins. Along with these, they are also rich in calcium and folic acid, which plays an important role in a healthy nervous system and a smart brain.

When picking a nut butter, it is a good idea to always go for the sugar-free versions and sweeten them with either agave syrup, honey or serve them with your own homemade marmalade.

Chia seeds

Chia seeds have become a big part of our diets in the past few years and for a good reason. Rich in healthy fats and important omega-3 fatty acids which help improve brain function, memory and promote heart health, these little black seeds will help your little one feel full thanks to the fiber and good source of plant protein.

Even if you are a busy parent, you can prepare a chia seed pudding from the night before. All you have to do is to mix a few spoonfuls of chia seeds, a dairy or plant-based milk of your choice and a sweetener. In the morning you will have a tasty and filling breakfast with minimal effort.

Berries

Colourful and tasty, berries can be a great choice for your little ones’ breakfast ideas. These little guys are packed with vitamins and antioxidants and will help your kids feel awake and energised.

It is a good idea to choose fresh berries if you have access to them. Blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, goji berries, and even grapes are all great options and you can easily add them in smoothies, fruit bowls, nice cream paired with bananas or in your overnight chia pudding.

Eggs

Eggs are truly a great option as they are a great source of an inexpensive yet high-quality protein. Combined with the vitamins it contains, such as D, B6, and B12 as well as various minerals, it will surely make your little one feel ready for the day.

Along with that, eggs are easy to cook in many different ways and kids will tend to eat them a lot easier. You can prepare egg-based pancakes, egg muffins or an omelet with their favourite veggies too. Don’t forget to add some fresh or frozen spinach for some extra iron.

Whole wheat bread

Whole wheat products are produced by whole grains that haven’t been processed as much and therefore contain a significantly higher amount of fiber, B vitamins, and minerals.  They are also a good source of carbohydrates which are essentially what our body needs in order to feel energised.

All of these aspects combined, make whole wheat bread a great option for your child’s breakfast and when combined with the right sides, they can become a great breakfast meal.

Avocados

The green fruit of the avocado tree has become very popular in many households. Known for its high concentration in healthy fats and fiber, it can give your children the needed calories and nutrition they need to start the day.

Oatmeal

A staple breakfast in many British homes, oatmeal has expanded its reach all around the world and is known as a filling and delicious breakfast. Being high in protein, it will help your kids feel full for longer and give them more energy to play and enjoy their day.

Hummus

Legumes can be a great choice for a kid’s breakfast but they can be rather heavy on the stomach. Here is exactly where hummus comes to save the day. Packed with vitamins, proteins, and healthy fats, this tahini and chickpea spread is bound to energise your kids and help them look forward to breakfast every day.

You can use hummus in sandwiches made with whole wheat bread for an even better protein combination and of course pair it with red bell peppers and carrots for an added source of vitamins A, E and C. Apart from that, it is also very easy and fun to make at home too!
