Coconut oil is the darling of the food and health worlds right now, and with good reason! Coconut oil is free-from trans fats and cholesterol, making it a truly healthy fat. As well as being great to cook with (it remains stable at high temperatures, making coconut oil one of the best oils for roasting and baking), this wonder oil also lots of other health-boosting properties too. 

Here are my top 10 reasons to love coconut oil:

1. Metabolism and weight loss

Coconut oil contains healthy and good-for-you medium-chain fatty acids, which our bodies can use quickly for energy. These fatty acids can help us burn energy more quickly, boost our metabolism and help with weight loss
2. Boost your immunity 

Several studies have shown that coconut oil has excellent anti-viral and antibacterial properties, again down to the medium chain fatty acids. If you're looking to improve your immunity, incorporating coconut oil into your daily diet (as well as plenty of fresh fruit and veg) could be a great move. 

3. Tummy troubles

Yes we’re still raving about these fatty acids! If you're suffering with a tummy upset, coconut oil could help you recover. Again, it's down to the antibacterial and antiviral properties of those fatty acids. Coconut oil has also been found to benefit digestive disorders including irritable bowel syndrome.

Last but not least - coconut oil tastes great! Raw, virgin coconut oil has a mild, coconut taste. This goes perfectly in smoothies, curries, you might even enjoy it on butter instead of toast. 

The key when using coconut oil is to make sure you always choose virgin (raw) coconut oil, ideally organic. If you buy coconut oil which isn't labelled as virgin or raw, the oil is likely to have been refined using mechanical and chemical processes. Although refined coconut oil is cheaper and has a longer shelf life than virgin coconut oil, most of the health benefits are likely to have been destroyed during the processing.
