Flax Seeds really are one of the most powerful plant-based foods in the world, chiefly due to three remarkable properties: the levels of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, lignans & fibre.
- Omega-3 essential fatty acids, in particular alpha-linolenic acid (ALA): "good" fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. A tablespoon of ground Flax Seed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s. Only Chia Seeds have more ALA, though plant-based ALA is still always inferior to fish oil.
- Lignans: antioxidants with that are linked with benefits for heart health, metabolic syndrome & several hormone-sensitive cancers. Flax Seed are the richest known dietary source of lignan's, containing up to 750 times more of the amounts present in some other foods.
- Fibre: Almost all (95%) of the carbs in Flax Seed consist of fibre, both soluble & insoluble. Soluble fibre helps regulate blood sugar & cholesterol levels. Flax Seeds are a natural laxative & promote regularity as well as reducing hunger & cravings due mainly to their insoluble fibre content.
Flax Seeds contain protein & essential amino acids. They may also help prevent heart disease & support immune function & are more effective at lowering blood pressure than any other food. They are a good source of several vitamins & minerals needed for optimal health, including copper, magnesium, thiamine (B1), molybdenum and phosphorus.
Commonly added to baking recipes or smoothies. Sprinkle Flax Seed onto cereal in the morning for an extra omega-3 boost. You can also add it to nut & seed mixes or make Flax Seed crackers by mixing with just enough water to cover them, leaving to soak for two hours then pressing into biscuit shapes before dehydrating slowly in a very low-temperature oven or food dehydrator.
Golden Flax Seed is used in exactly the same way as brown Flax Seed. Both types are nutritionally similar, though these golden Flax Seed have a lighter taste.
For a great smoothie, add 2 tsp (8g) of Flax Seeds to a blender with a banana & 200ml almond milk (or your favourite alternative) & blend well. Add berries too for an extra boost.
If just used like this, the pot contains around 9 servings, so it's great value.
Volume: 72g resealable pot. Shelf life 18-24 months.
