The Benefits of Vitamin D and Calcium
As much as we hate to admit it, winter can be a hard time to get outdoors. We tend to be driven inside and can get all sorts of nasty bugs from being around friends and family too. This can be made worse by a lack of Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is created when sunlight hits the skin - it is the agent needed to effectively absorb calcium and phosphorus, keeping our bones and teeth strong as well as boosting our immune system and keeping the colds at bay.
So how can we get more Vitamin D? Below are three suggestions that you may wish to try:
- Soak up the sun, even in winter. The temperature doesn't matter, as long as the sun hits the skin. Try going for a walk at lunchtime if the weather is nice or having a window open where you're sitting if the weather allows.
- Our body still absorbs some calcium, even without Vitamin D, so make sure you're getting some extra calcium. If you are really constrained for time, have a bowl of cereal. A lot of cereals are fortified with Vitamin D (check the box) and you'll be fuelling your body with a little extra calcium too.
- Keep an eye out for fortified foods: you can buy Vitamin D infused milk and yoghurts instead of your normal brand for example.
Let's use Vitamin D to keep us all healthy and strong this winter.
