Baking Tips by Top Artisan Baker
Ready to gain some confidence in the kitchen?
“Baking is a talent”, indeed it is. You take a handful of raw ingredients, whip them up and turn them into delectable brownies, fudgy or iced butter cookies, mesmerising cakes and so on. One of our top bakers, Elizabeth Kerr founder of EK Bakery, shares a handful of baking tips and tricks to roll up your sleeves and start baking confidently. She’s here to help you (and us!) take our baking game to the next level, teaching us the know-how tips and tricks of the game.
Apart from stating the obvious when baking, which is the cliche of ‘following the recipe step by step’ you do need to have a solid foundation before proceeding.
Elizabeth’s first piece of advice is to start investing in good quality equipment. “Good quality utensils last a lifetime” she says, and so she recommends buying less and choosing the best you can afford. Key essentials that need to be in a baker’s kitchen, whether beginner or not, are a couple of metal or pyrex bowls with a flat base, a palette knife, an electric hand mixer and a solid (can’t stress this enough) whisk.
Elizabeth then went on to share another secret of hers, by saying “let your butter and eggs (if using) come to room temperature before baking.” The baking mixture will emulsify much better once the ingredients are all at similar temperatures.
