The Queen's Favourite Foods Revealed!

At the ripe age of 96, it’s only fair to wonder what kind of food the Queen eats on a day to day basis to maintain her health. This might come as a surprise, but the Queen apparently is a creature of habit, just like many of us.

The Queen’s former chef, Darren McGrady, revealed Her Majesty’s dining habits and proceeded his career with a book about his memoirs at the palace. McGrady’s role at Buckingham Palace was vital, serving as Queen Elizabeth’s personal chef for over 15 years. He’s worked for other members of the royal family as well, including Princess Diana. In his book “Eating Royally: Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen” the Queen’s personal chef revealed Her Majesty’s favourite meals, and we just couldn’t wait to see what that list includes.

Apparently, Her Majesty likes to start the day off just like all of us, with a simple cup of tea and biscuits. Sometimes, this is followed by a bowl of cereal. McGrady said that the Queen’s tea preference is always Earl Grey tea and continues to have four meals a day, eating only a small portion from each meal.

Her lunch is a popular one that has been recreated by many renowned chefs around the world - grilled Dover sole with wilted spinach or courgette. McGrady previously stated that the Queen “is not a foodie” and added "When she dines on her own, she's very disciplined. No starch is the rule."

Then, the Queen will have her usual afternoon tea with scones, jam and clotted cream. Spoiler alert: it’s jam on first for the Queen.

McGrady also revealed that during his time as a chef, The Queen’s guilty pleasure was a croque monsieur sandwich with melted Gruyere, ham and whipped eggs. (Gasp! The meal closest to the Queen’s heart is one for the humans!)

McGrady didn’t fail to mention that the most popular meal of the week at the palace was Friday’s fish and chips. “All of the chefs would have fish and chips for lunch.” he said, and apparently, the Queen had her fish and chips in panko breadcrumbs instead of batter. As for her condiment of choice, classic bbq sauce and ketchup held the royal warrants on the table, whereas the chefs preferred to pair their dish with salad cream.

Her Majesty’s dinner varies from day to day, alternating between meat, fish and vegetables as simple as her lunch, simply cooked and with a choice from pheasant, venison or chicken. Of course, Queen Elizabeth loves a Sunday roast just as much as anyone else and McGrady admitted that King Philips was quite the expert on the BBQ. He continued to say that family BBQs on the Balmoral estate were a big family thing when the royals were younger.

So, here it is. Everything the Queen eats in a day. With the big Platinum Jubilee weekend fast approaching, we can’t wait to celebrate Her Majesty’s astonishing 70 years on the throne with jubilee gifts like some Jubilee slab fudge, a slice traditional Victoria sponge or even a Jubilee inspired traditional pork pie.

We’ve also compiled a gift guide including all Jubilee exclusives and The best Platinum jubilee gifts (Queen approved, probably!).
